On 7 June, the French resident in Africa and America were invited to elect councilors who represent them in the French Abroad Assembly. Approximately 9% of voters have expressed their choice by Internet, an option now available for all french citizens living abroad, following the publication of an official decree.
The French Abroad Assemby, chaired by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, elects the twelve senators of French Abroad.
More than 6 000 voters chose to cast their vote electronically following a secure and easily accessible system. It is the only French election in which it is possible to vote by internet. French abroad can already vote by mail or by going to the consulate closest to their residence.
Prior to its implementation, the system of e-voting is subject to an independent expert on the guarantees made to the privacy, security, honesty and control of the ballot. Only this independent expert has access to the source code of the voting system, before issuing his report to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the office of electronic voting and the Commission Nationale Informatique et Libertés (CNIL).
