At the end of the first day of the 10th World e-Democracy Forum, André Santini, Member of French Parliament and Mayor of Issy-les-Moulineaux, Phil Noble, President of PoliticsOnline, Daniel Van Lerberghe, President of the European Politech Institute and Franck Confino, Editor of Territorial blog announced e-Democracy Awards 2009 among those who contribute concretely to change the world of politics with the Internet and technologies.
Sixteen finalists on twenty from four categories in competition were present during the official reception of the World e-Democracy Forum, organized in the French National Assembly. They came from NGOs, companies, political parties, Universities and are based in the United States, Egypt, Croatia, Malta, Italy, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Germany and France.
The winners of the e-democracy Awards 2009 are:
World e-Democracy Forum e-democracy Award: EU PROFILER
Professors Alexandre Trechsel and Fabian Breuer of the European Institute of Florence received the World eDemocracy Forum 2009 Award for EU Profiler, an online tool was used during the last European elections by some 2,5 millions of citizens. An impartial tool allowed comparing its opinions with those of some 300 European political parties before voting in the elections of the European Parliament of June, 2009. EU PROFILER is an innovative site of "advice in the vote ", allowing citizens to find their political identity.
International e-Democracy Award : Peter Greenberger, manager of the political advertising for Google (USA)
It is Phil Noble, President of PoliticsOnline, the web's oldest political internet company based in the United States, who gave the international Award to Peter Greenberger for its personal role in the appropriation of the Internet tools by politicians, in particular by the team of Barack Obama. The online tools that Google offers (YouTube, Google Maps, Google Docs, Google Ads) were heavily used over the course of the recent American presidential campaign. Democratic candidate Barack Obama spent 7.5 million dollars integrating these tools into his campaign strategy. Peter Greenberger informs and educates policy makers and administration officials regarding the use of these tools in order to make the political process more accessible to ordinary citizens. Graduate of the London School of Economic and Political Science, and the University of Yale, Peter Greenberger was before joining Google, manager of campaign for various actors of the American political stage, then manager of the development of New Media Strategies.
European e-Democracy Award: the Progressive Alliance of the Socialists and Democrats to the European Parliament
Daniel van Lerberghe, President of the European Politech Institute, gave the European e-democracy Award 2009 to Tony Robinson, leader of the Internet unit of the Progressive Alliance of the Socialists and Democrats to the European Parliament. The website of the European Parliament Socialist Group offers a place of debate and information in web 2.0 style, combining the power of social networks, multimedia, and podcasts.
French e-Democracy Award: Auwwwergne of the temptation
Franck Confino, eidtor of Blog Territorial.com, gave the French Award to Mrs Catherine Henri-Martin, vice-President of the Regional Council of Auvergne, for the initiative Auwwwergne of the temptation. Auwwwergne.com is a platform of blogs, expression and exchange leaned to a social network (the first one for a region). She allows all the members to create a profile, to ask for contacts, to subscribe to groups and to create blogs on subjects of their choices. So, she gives the floor to the citizens and establishes the dialogue between them on varied subjects.




We need more e democracy at the grassroots
level, providing opportunities for everyday
people to become involved in the political
process. Politicians are using it to great
advantage, now it's time for individuals to
utilize these tools to enhance and spread
democracy, forming a more direct democracy
truly of the people.
